Recently, a dog was found wandering around a neighborhood alley with a 30 kg (66 lbs) iron weight hanging from its neck.
According to an SBS report on June 5, the dog was found slumped on the ground with two heavy iron plates tied to its leash. To make matters worse, it also had a serious leg injury.
Upon reviewing neighborhood surveillance CCTV footage, it was revealed that the dog had dragged the iron weight all the way down from a nearby mountain and had wandered around the neighborhood for days, struggling to survive.
Fortunately, thanks to a resident's report, the dog was transferred to a local shelter. When an official notice was posted to find the owner, a man came forward claiming ownership. The man explained that he used the iron weight because he had nowhere to tie the dog temporarily in the mountains. However, after suspicions of animal abuse were raised, he did not come to retrieve the dog once the claim period ended.
Thankfully, the dog is now preparing to meet a new owner with the help of an animal care facility.
Netizens reaction
Following the news reports, many Korean netizens expressed anger and urged for the animal protection law to be strengthened in Korea. Some speculated that the man had abandoned the dog in the mountains, leaving it to die.
They commented:
"Please strengthen animal protection laws."
"Shouldn't the owner be punished?"
"It looks like it came down from the mountain to look for its owner."
"This was clearly an attempt to let the dog die in the mountains."
"How could anyone do this? He’s a demon."
"How hard must it have been for the dog? If you're going to treat them like that, don't have pets!"
"We should hang a heavy iron weight on that owner instead."
"They should tie him up on a mountain the same way and let wild boars hunt him down. You're not even human!"
"Even just looking at the photo makes my heart ache… Even people struggle with 30kg. I hope the dog meets a loving owner and lives out the rest of its life peacefully."
"There are humans worse than dogs. I truly hate people sometimes."
"Must find a good family for this dog. It deserves happiness."
"There are way too many unqualified dog owners. If you can't do it right, just don't have pets."
"That man is crazy. He has no right to raise dogs."
"That owner needs to be investigated further so he doesn't abuse other dogs."
"Hope Karma gets the owner."
